Keeping carpets perfectly clean is, well, challenging to say the least—if not virtually impossible. If tough, unexpected stains like blood, paint, or pet urine have you down, take heart in knowing Chem-Dry can help you remove them for good.
Here are some of the most common household carpet stains and the best methods for getting rid of them.
#1 – Blood Stains
The key with blood stains is to act fast. Start by using cold water so rinse away as much of the stain as possible. Next, combine 2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid with cold water in a spray bottle and apply a small amount at a time to the stained area. Oxi-clean also works well on blood stains.
#2 – Ink Stains
Saturate a clean cloth with isopropyl alcohol then dab gently on the stain. The key is to lightly blot—not rub or scrub too hard. Nail polish remover may also work well. Be sure to test a small area of your carpet first and follow up either solution with a water rinse and vacuum.
#3 – Pet Stains
Pick up solid messes and gently blot moisture immediately. Take caution not to scrub too hard or smear the area. You may also try a speciality carpet cleaning solution—particularly one with ammonia that’s marked as safe for pets. A warm vinegar/water solution followed by sprinkling baking soda on the area also works well.
#4 – Water Soluble Stains
This includes things like chocolate, wine, or vomit. Try a solution of either 1 cup water for every 1 tablespoon of ammonia or 5 parts water with 1 part chlorine bleach. Keep in mind that bleach may damage your carpet, so test a small area first. If you have a wool-blend carpet, use only gentle soap and water.
#5 – Oil, Fat, Gum, Or Wax
For gum or wax, place ice over the area to freeze it then use a knife or spoon to chip away at the stain. Vacuum away any remaining pieces. For various types of fat, wax, or oil, place a paper towel over the carpet then iron over it. The stain should stick to the towel.
#6 – Glue
Use a cotton ball to press rubbing alcohol onto the stain. Once the glue is wet, you should be able to slowly wipe it away using a soft cloth.
#7 – Coffee
Start by absorbing as much of the moisture as you can, then try applying a cleaning solution containing 1 ¼ cups of water and ¼ cup of bleach. Rinse the area with warm water then vacuum dry. If your carpet is discolored by bleach, schedule a professional stain removal service.
#8 – Latex Paint Or Washable Ink
Try a solution of ¼ teaspoon white vinegar in 32 ounces of water. Apply a small amount of the solution to your carpet at a time then repeat the process until the stain is gone.
#9 – Cola, Dyes, Food, Or Alcoholic Drinks
Try a DIY white vinegar cleaning solution or a store bought stain remover. Oxi-Clean also works well at removing these types of stains.
